FAQs

Hyperhidrosis is defined as excessive sweating and can affect areas such as the armpit, groin, hands, feet or face. Sometimes, the entire body can be affected.

Hyperhidrosis can be inherited and if this is the case, it usually starts around puberty. However, hyperhidrosis that is caused by disorders of the thyroid or pituitary glands, tumours, diabetes, gout, menopause or the side effects of certain drugs, can start at any time. While hyperhidrosis does not pose a serious threat to health, it can cause significant emotional and psychological distress, embarrassment and can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life.

With excessive sweating it is not unusual for the affected area to literally drip with sweat – something that cannot be controlled by antiperspirants. We can disable the sweat glands for a period of six to twelve months by tiny injections of botulinum toxin.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK have been safely using botulinum toxin for more than 20 years. Botulinum toxin is a highly refined, purified substance that is injected with a tiny needle.

Treatment takes 15-20 minutes and it is administered as an injection in very small doses in numerous areas, using a fine needle. There is usually very mild to moderate pain experienced with this treatment, which should subside very quickly. Treatment for excessive sweating can last for up to 9-12 months.

All treatments are carried out by fully qualified and experienced doctors.
